Why accounting firms need a different kind of IT provider
Generalist IT support gets you so far — and for accounting practices, “so far” usually ends about two weeks before BAS quarter when half the office is remoting in to finalise lodgements and the file server picks that moment to act up.
JTIT supports multiple Brisbane accounting firms (including PJS Accountants and Gillow & Teese, who have written about working with us in the testimonials) and we’ve shaped our managed IT stack around the realities of an Australian accounting practice: peak periods that aren’t optional, regulatory obligations that aren’t negotiable, and a software stack that’s dense, integrated and unforgiving of downtime.
This page is specifically for principals and practice managers evaluating IT options. If you want the broader managed IT picture, that’s covered on the managed IT services page.
What changes for an accounting practice in 2026
A handful of forces have reshaped what “good IT” means for a small-to-mid accounting firm:
TPB cybersecurity obligations. The Tax Practitioners Board now expects tax practitioners to meet defined cybersecurity standards, including breach response procedures and reasonable safeguards. “We have antivirus” doesn’t cover it.
Cyber insurance has gotten serious. Insurers are asking for evidence of MFA, EDR, backup, training and incident response plans. Some questionnaires effectively encode Essential Eight Maturity Level 1. Firms that can’t demonstrate the basics are getting non-renewals or large premium hikes.
The attack surface is bigger. Accounting firms are an explicit target for ransomware crews because of the ratio of valuable client data to mid-tier security maturity. The standard playbook is phishing → credential harvesting → MFA bypass via fatigue → mass mailbox export → ransomware.
Hybrid work is permanent. Even firms that pulled people back to the office still have partners working from home regularly, junior staff working flexibly, and offshore preparers in the rotation. The IT model has to support all three modes without leaking data.
What JTIT does differently for accounting firms
Three things shape how we approach an accounting client:
1. The IT calendar matches your work calendar
We schedule patching, infrastructure work and major changes around your busy periods — not ours. October and February through April are change-freeze periods for most accounting clients. Critical security patches still go out, but routine work waits.
2. The cybersecurity stack is set to “audit-defensible,” not “minimum viable”
Every JTIT accounting client runs:
- Enforced MFA on every Microsoft 365 identity, with conditional access tying access to known locations or compliant devices.
- Managed endpoint detection and response on every workstation and server.
- Modern email security (details here) — banking and accounting fraud emails are the hardest to filter and we tune accordingly.
- Dark-web credential monitoring so you find out before an attacker does that a partner’s password has leaked.
- Quarterly security awareness training — required by some PI insurers and demonstrably reduces successful phishing.
3. Practice management is a first-class workload
During onboarding we document the entire practice management stack: which version of MYOB or Xero Practice, which add-ons, how engagement letters flow, where workpapers live. That documentation goes into the JTIT helpdesk so when someone rings and says “FYI is running slow” we know what FYI is, where it lives, and what depends on it.
Real Brisbane accounting clients
JTIT supports practices across SEQ — small two-partner firms, mid-sized 30-staff practices, and a handful of larger groups going through acquisition cycles. Two examples published with permission:
- PJS Accountants — a multi-partner Brisbane practice. The driver was tax-season responsiveness and proactive issue prevention.
- Gillow & Teese Accountants — moved from another MSP for proactive monitoring, sensible cybersecurity recommendations, and a helpdesk that actually picks up the phone.
We can usually arrange a reference call once we’re past the initial fit conversation.
Where to start
Most accounting firms exploring JTIT begin with a free IT health check — a structured 60–90 minute review of your environment, security posture, licensing, backup arrangements and risk areas. You get a written report at the end, regardless of whether you sign with us. For accounting principals it doubles as evidence of due diligence.
Or call us on 1300 585 850 — we’re happy to talk before any commitment.
